VdeV-type rules seem to be the way of the future. FIA CN is slightly different because the class usually runs in the European Hillclimb Championship, but while the CNs in VdeV are all 2-litre cars, the Hillclimb cars are still 3-litre. However, the only place 3-litre cars run now outside hillclimbing is in the Italian Prototype Series (and maybe Interserie?). Even Britsports have allowed the 3-litre to run as Invitationals only.
Even with the full grids running in the VdeV, I believe this would work better if the cars were reserved for National Championships, with a big final at the end of the season. The VdeV races have one problem though, they're usually very long, around six hours. I think that's too much for an amateur drivers series.
