Answer - they were rapidly replaced. (By people with lesser levels of training and experience).
As F1 events in some racing backwaters show, the quality of the vast majority of marshals is not that important. All the FIA require is someone to flick the switch on the flag lights when commanded and to sweep the crap off the track before and after. All some people think they need is CCTV, backed up by snatch and intervention vehicles. Overseen by 1/2 a dozen paid employees in race control.
I think anything else we can do is a bonus to them.
