The drivers don't get hurt because of grass and gravel.

The SAFER barriers are great. The ever continuing asphalt extensions not. But I've pretty much given up hope on La Sarthe anyway, it is utterly doomed for sanitation like all big FIA tracks today. Let's just be happy they haven't touched Nordschleife yet, that's the thankfully overlooked gem despite relatively big categories running there today.
