JW was a surprise selection at that time. The jury was still very much out.
Jason Richards was the dominant partner and attracted most of the attention in the two co-drives that saw Whincup finish on the podium in 2005.
There was little to suggest Whincup was going to become the best touring car driver this country has seen. However Triple 8 did see something and the rest is history.
A valid career comparison is that of Jamie and Jimmie Johnson. Johnson lucked into a single Busch series win and while being a regular top 15 runner (at best) in the Busch series landed the drive at Hendrick for the 2002 season. Someone at Hendrick saw something.... and well, you know the story.
