Poor braking systems were a problem that we often had back in the 60s, so lap 2 is not something that surprises me. I can remember that after a 10 lap race at Brands Indy back then that I had actually no braking action left as I drove back to the paddock, resulting in my "using" the car in front of me to stop my car when we had to wait to go through the tunnel. Luckily I had been crawling along the roadway because of the lack of brakes, meaning that I didn't damage either of the cars - more of a very gentle tap, such as might happen when in a very tight parking spot when trying to get in or out of the space. Very embarrassing, indeed.
Similar to Andy97's problem with heavy steering in his Escort, we have all probably got so used to servo assisted braking and power steering, and this accentuates our feelings when driving cars without these things.
