I should have stated the question better. I wondered if Karam's time would have been reinstated if the day had ended with the first yellow for rain. When Peacock coverage ended it sounded like he would be starting in the last row if he didn't qualify again on Saturday. That is what I would have expected, so was surprised that Newgarden got his run back. I don't recall a situation like this in the past but I always assumed that once a run was withdrawn there was no way to reclaim it no matter what the circumstances. I wasn't aware that another attempt was guaranteed if you withdrew your current time. What if time had run out before Josef got on track? Seems to me that a withdrawn run's status should not change due to subsequent happenings.
