It did but Sainz also started further up the grid, with potentially less traffic to get through and therefore less tyre ware.
I've seen this offset strategy used in IndyCar a lot in similar situations, when a race is shortened. One driver goes on one strategy and their team mate on another. 57 laps as opposed to 53 may not sound a lot but when tyre deg comes into play, it can make all the difference.
