Asinine.

NASCAR has the right idea, make 'em big and an integral part of the event. People associate number with driver and sponsor as well, you can actually tell the difference between the cars, everyone's a winner.

The annoying thing is that on many racing cars there are ginormous gaps where a large number could be placed without upsetting the almighty sponsor, but no-one takes advantage.
