Lincolnshire’s exciting and challenging ‘Mini-Nürburgring’ parkland venue.
Pierre Livingston has proved that his Oulton heroics were no fluke with a triple victory at a sunny Cadwell Park.
The first race of the weekend was surrounded by confusion. The Kentagon Cup was meant to have been a replacement for the race at Brands Hatch that was canned due to time pressures, but drivers found out at the last minute that it had probably not been approved by MSUK and was now a non-championship race. Leading championship contenders Cam Jackson and Linton Stutely pulled out, along with Matt Wrigley who had run well during the original Brands meeting.
Livingston, driving his familiar slate-blue Merlyn Mk20, was only challenged for the briefest of intervals by Simon Jackson’s Crossle 20F. Jackson had taken ‘advantage’ (at the sufferance of a 10 second penalty!) of the clear space on the grid ahead of him and quickly dropped back.
Danny Stanzl, back in his own Elden Mk8, slipped past Jackson on the second lap and held a secure second until his slowed and then stopped on lap 10, having run out of fuel. Jackson had already retired with car trouble.
This opened the way for the Radio Caroline Over 50 drivers to show their speed. Ross Drybrough took 2nd place after managing to pass both Tim Brise (Merlyn Mk20) and Paul Unsworth (Lola T200) in his usual measured style. Brise was third, despite his car making some worrying noises at certain points. Unsworth was fourth, some way behind, and Kevin Stanzl fifth, driving a Crossle 16F, Alex Meek was 6th in his Merlyn.
The championship got back underway on Sunday and Livingston continued his imperious form. He had a sterner challenge from Cam Jackson in the March 709 and Stutely’s Royale RP3. Stutely had qualified second and was initially the faster of the two chasing drivers, but a mistake on lap 2 where he went wide allowed Jackson to catch up.
In turn, Jackson made up some ground to Livingston by working the backmarker situation better, although this lost him some of his advantage over Stutely. Both Livingston and Jackson dipped below 1:34, the only drivers to do so.
Clive Richards returned to the series with a fourth place in his Merlyn Mk20, overhauling Brise and Drybrough and getting closer to Stutely at one point. He was the leading Over 50 driver.
O50 points leader however, Brise was eighth after losing touch with the chasing group late in the race. Drybrough was fifth, ahead of returnee Westie Mitchell in another Mk20. Both Drybrough and Mitchell had had to make extensive repairs to their cars after crashes. Drybrough damaged the front of his car in qualifying for the Kentagon Cup and enlisted the help of Nigel Grant to replace the radiator and other parts. Mitchell had an accident in qualifying and also had to work through the night to get onto the grid. Having qualified eleventh, the work paid off.
Robert Wainwright was seventh in his Elden Mk8, ahead of Brise. Kevin Stanzl was ninth, out-scoring son Danny next by 2 tenthes, who got tangled up with Brian Morris’s Lola T202 at the back of the circuit. Both cars had off-track excursions but still carried on, with Stanzl faring better came tenth. Morris, who had had an earlier FF2000 crash, was eleventh one tenth behind. Simon Jackson was twelfth, struggling for pace somewhat and lucky to escape the Stanzl/Morris melee. Paul Unsworth, James Russell, David Squire all had fun into the top 14.
The remaining ten cars all having their battles on the up and downs of Lincolnshire’s Wolds.
In 4th 5th & 6th overall, Clive, Ross and Westie earned some good O50 Points for the Radio Caroline Championship and in the main one too.
The second race was another Livingston whitewash, with the Anglo-French undergraduate winning by just over ten seconds. He utilised his trademark rapid start and put in some devastatingly quick laps early, leaving Jackson and Stutely behind.
There was more drama over second place, with Stutely quickly passing Jackson from third place. Jackson snatched second back at Park on lap 2, although Stutely was still right on his tail. The green and white Royale lay in wait behind the orange March and did sneak past in the latter stages, before being put back in its place by Jackson.
However, Stutely was able to reclaim his second place when Jackson made a very rare mistake at Charlies and sent his car into a double spin on the grass. He rejoined without losing a place, but Stutely was now safely in second with Jackson just under eight seconds behind.
Danny Stanzl was on a mission after his first-race frustrations and an indifferent start – at least he had a full tank with which to fight... He was fourth overall following a highly entertaining skirmish with Richards. Richards was closing on Stanzl in the closing laps and attempted a charge to the line, but Stanzl beat him to it by 0.128s. Richards was fifth with Morris some six seconds behind and safely out of Stanzl’s way.
Drybrough was seventh, Morris having pushed his way past fairly late on. Drybrough was still in touch, with less than half a second between the two.
Brise and Mitchell were next in eighth and ninth with not much between them. Mitchell had won a private battle with Simon Jackson having got ahead on lap 9. Jackson was tenth and Kevin Stanzl 11th. Stanzl was attacked by Morris on lap 5 and he took Mitchell and Jackson with him. Some great racing and less than 2 seconds covered these five cars.

Danny Stanzl stands 4th at 56 points, we have Ross Drybrough at 48 and Tim Brise on 44 at 5th & 6th places. 31 to Kevin Stanzl with Clive Richards coming in at 26. Both Rob Wainwright & Matt Wrigley have 23 points and it’s 20 to Paul Unser.
OUR RADIO CAROLINE O50 Championship …
Here we go pop pickers. ‘Top of the Pops’ is still Tim Brise now with 94 points followed very closely by Ross Drybrough on 89. 73 points to Kevin Stanzl keeps him in the action and has just crept head of our consistent Paul Unsworth with his 55.

Clive Richards is in for a Trophy chance if he keeps his performance up with 50 points after two spectacular 1st places and right on his heels at 47 points is Cam’s Dad, Simon Jackson. Weighing-in at 38 is David Squire followed by last year’s 2nd place Champ Winner Brian Morris on 30 with Westie Mitchell 2 points behind him, on 10 points is HFF Stalwart Alex Meek. (pictured below).
