Istanbul Park is about two hours away from Istanbul, which doesn't help and maybe they just didn't find it particularly interesting. Prior to the Turkish GP, Turkey had a couple of tracks, one in Izmir, Ülkü Park and another in İzmit Körfez. It doesn't look like they are big on their motorsports.
