We never had much luck trying to use the cheap PMR radios (aside: I am always amused that the french word for Walkie-Talkie is Talky-Walky).
If someone got stuck at a toll booth for more than a few seconds everyone was out of range to hear any 'I am stuck at the toll booth' messages.
When cheap mobile phone roaming came along that made them redundant as calls and text always went through.
