Ideally, it'd be nice to believe that F1 is a true meritocricy, but the reality is that a lot of guys who deserve to do well either don't make F1, or, in this case, don't get much in the way of results, whether due to bad luck, poor machinery or whatever.

These guys all seem like fine examples. All of them have achieved success elsewhere. I think they all could ultimately have succeeded in F1 - Van Der Poele, for example, outpaced Damon Hill 5-2 in their time as team-mates, with only 1 year of extra experience, while Rahal put in 2 good drives for Wolf before tehy scaled back to 1 car.
