Audi cars belong to a niche market and comparing it with the 16 millions car os the States is completely out of any sense.
As you correctly say, there are currently many more Audi owners in the Alms fan base then the irl's one.
But after some years in the ALMS, there may be reasons to state that the potential of the Alms fan base, in terms of sales, has been filled, and new segments deserve to be explored, in order to develop (or just maintain) sales. The irl fan base could be one of them. In this perspective, Having an Audi engine winning Indy500 would be way more significant than winning in Alms for the empteenth time.
That's your typical wishful thinking attitude  If economy recovers it could just help Audi's expectations about IRL. |
What is an Indy 500 win worth? Not what it used to be. Tv Ratings are now half of 15 years ago. From the over head shots I saw this year, plenty of empty seats too.
For a company that will sell 100,000 cars or less in 2008 in the USA, that is a hell of a lot of cars to sell just to pay for the program and it's doubtful and Indy win would really bring people to the showroom and buy.
