Yet Foxtel is the only pay TV operator restricted under the legislation, meaning it can’t bid for certain rights at the same time as free-to-air networks and other streaming players. It claims that even Kayo - which isn’t a traditional pay TV operator - is also restricted and considers this an unfair disadvantage. Kayo has also recently launched a freemium option, putting some events in front of its paywall such as
Netball and Supercars in a bid to drive growth. It has also been offering discounted subscriptions through partnerships with brands such as Uber.
