Yes, I did do the first 3 miles with the nose wheel down.

The disappearing water has turned out to be a leaking hot water tank.
When getting home and parking it 'quickly around the back to sort out tomorrow' we dropped one wheel into the flower bed, resulting in the purchase of a trolley jack today to raise the wheel sufficiently to get a plank underneath to roll it back out.
Must try harder!
