And they tested throughout the entire season in those years. I remember McLaren testing no less than eight days at Imola in the week prior the 1989 San Marino Grand Prix.
If an engine went during qualifying, a driver just took the spare car. If a driver wanted to change everything on his car after Saturday's qualifying session, he could and try things the very next morning.
These are just examples of what is banned since then. All is done for the sake of cost reduction. But thirty years on, cost reductions are discussed more than ever.
