You're certainly right about the vehicle, at least in the form it was publicly displayed. And Ben Bowlby has already stated that significant design criteria will not be altered before prototyping.
Each of the Delta positions...reduced cost, open sourcing, implementation of green technology, potential interest from auto manufacturers...are transparent arguments when held up in the light of day.
And I believe you are right that the vehicle itself, in the big picture, doesn't matter that much. The depth of the trenches is the question, and which parties will end up buried in them.
