Generally, I don't think that runoff should be seen as a luxury but a necessity. My parents, who traveled to the Monaco GP for a few times during the 70s, told me that there used to be grandstands then, where now there are the escape roads in Ste Devote, Casino Square and Mirabeau.
And these corners do have escape roads now, whereas the Kink in Elkhart Lake still doesn't.
I'd edit your credo to walls don't hurt when drivers are lucky.
