"Ferrari later explained that a bleed nipple had come loose on the rear brakes, meaning that at the critical moment when Michael applied the brakes all the pressure would have gone from the rear brakes, allowing only the front brakes to slow car down. Looking at the TV pictures, experienced people thought Schumacher "grabbed" a brake, in other words, been too sharp on the brake pedal and locked the wheels up, whilst others thought he had suffered a stuck throttle, driving the rear wheels on while the fronts were locked. But when the car was returned to the Ferrari garage and the rear wheels taken away from the tyres to be stripped, some observers noted that there was no trace of any brake fluid on the rear wheel rims. If the bleed nipple had failed or been insufficiently tightened, there would surely have been quite a cascade of fluid over the inside part of the rim."
