If you exclude those people/teams that always support Le mans even in the lean periods not only do you take away that feeling that anyone can do it but you will also ensure that when sportscar racing is less well supported by the manufacturers then the fields will shrink to levels that will eventually kill it.
Quirky cars and passionate teams is one of the joys of Lemans, just think of Mazda's win and the joy of seeing teams like Martin Short's and Ray Mallock's when they do well.
When you have been to 20 plus lemans you appreciate just how much the little teams bring to this great race.
