CDI retard switch
Many old F1 cars with Lucas CDI ignition which had fixed timing had a retard switch to back the timing off to allow easier starting. Just wondering how this switch is wired in and how it actually retards the timing?
Appreciate any comments |

This http://www.jetav8r.com/Vision/Igniti...cdidiagram.gif is alleged to be a sketch of a CDI system. Alleged, because my Danish isn't up to checking what is says.
AJ6 Engineering published a book that includes chapters on CDI: http://www.jagweb.com/aj6eng/misc_bits.php CDI seems to be popular for mbikes nowadays - try posting on a biker forum? John |

It must switch to a sensor after the one used to run it .
I used to run fixed timing and that's all I did to start it |

You put 2 sensors on the crank (or wherever your toothed wheel is) and the 2nd sensor is postioned so the teeth pass over it just after the sensor used for the ECU.
You then have a switch setup to allow you to switch to your 2nd sensor. Has the effect of retarding the timing, and you can switch it back to your normal sensor (and therefor timing) once you've done the cold start. |

Couldnt you have a big lever on the steering wheel attached to the dizzy or magneto that advances and retards as required, opps sorry this has already been done about a 100 years ago!

On the Lucas CD system, the retard pin is typically connected to the starter solenoid. When you activate the starter, 12V is applied to the CDI pin and the ignition is retarded whilst you are cranking.
If you PM me with your email, I can send you a copy of the wiring diagram. Ian |
