Something very similar happened on Wales Rally GB in 2002 (I think)

the results were not pleasant - a warning to anyone doing rallies I think!

Yeah, I find it best to run out of petrol and leave your car at the start of the stage (Oh, and then do the same thing later at the next stage!)

You see a lot of vehicles parked on the side of the roads/stages on tv when they show events in other countries...

I would have said that parking on the outside of a bend was a no no anyway....

Along with spectators standing in all kinds of interesting positions. I've also seen competing cars hit said vehicles. It's dangerous and really the organisers should not allow it.

They don't allow it in the UK, all to do with health and safety and risk assesments and things; however you can't be on every cm of a stage every minute of the day and people will stand in all sorts of places, even if you tell them not to.

In other countries they don't have the health and safety exec that we have and therefore their rules about where people can stand are more lax than ours.

This would be why Wales Rally GB now has spectator areas then. although a certain amount of spectators do go anywhere. although there are a couple of points where the areas could be extended a bit.

best story I ever heard, from a reliable source, was the Doctor stationed at a Junction during the RAC (as it was) Rally of GB.......
the spectators refused to move from a head-on position despite many polite pleadings. The Doc went over to confirm that they would all be in situ when the cars arrived...... to which the answer was..........."Too Bl**dy Right!"
"Fine" says the Doc, who turned around and went to his car.
Only to return with a handful of organ donor cards which he started to distribute to the expectant speccys.
"Well, if you're going to stand there then you may as well be of some use to someone!!"

I'm not too sure how many moved but it certainly had an effect on some of them as well as making for a great story.

Love it! if politeness don't work, bring on the harsh reality. doubt it would work for a regular marshal though, unfortunatly

I must admit, the way it was described to me, with this cool/reserved doctor just stating the facts, seemed to have had the required effect. Like I said, I wasn't there but would loved to have been.

1200Datto27 has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
It looks like it was a Ambulance and FIV that the car hit.

Looks like that to me too.

Bit of a cock up on the organisational front.

I have also heard sector marshals ask spectators to move and when the inevitable answer of "get stuffed" comes back he then proceeds to tell them he has asked and that is what he will the tell the coronor when the case goes to court......

Another harsh reality that seems to do the trick as well...

Ian Briggs should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Any marshal on any rally, in the UK has the power to advise the stage commander they are not happy with the position of spectators, explaining loudly to all the other spectators why the stage is not starting tends to add peer-pressure to any awkward beggars, If you do ever find the stage has started after you have communicated a bad spectator situation, you know who not to marshal for ever again!

Yep, and I've done it on the GB in the past. The guy then thanked me and apologised once Tommi Makkinen had driven over the precise spot wehere he'd been standing.
