Any January sales for racers ?

Hi all..

I've decided to get a plumbed in fire extinguisher for next season..
I'm also going to look at fireproof undies.

does anyone know of any suppliers that I should phone first, that are having January sales ?

thought I'd ask here before starting a big phone around with a long list of suppliers, I'll be asking for a best price on a mechanical system suitable for a Triumph Spitfire.

Probably not unles you are planing on spending a couple of grand. Have you tried Jason Minshaw yet?

Yeah, look in the catalogue and he is listed as one of the operators. He is also on this forum as JMinsh and he is a great guy that if you mention Ten Tenths he will give you special care. Dont tell him I said that he is a great guy though.

.........And on top of that it's usually about £10 to park the car at the NEC + the petrol to get there & back .

Really when it comes to anything motor sport there is no such thing as a January sale - unless a helmet or suit is just about to go out of FIA date and therefore unuseable !

I had some very good deals this time last year from Peter Lloyd and Rallynuts.

I got a load of stuff from the Autosport show such as:

That's a total cost of £890.00. If you are interested the normal retail cost for all these bits would have been £1156.00. That's a saving of £256.00.

Well over here there is definatly no sales on through the race gear supply organisations. Slightly off topic I have found it cheaper to buy stuff from the UK and get it couriered out to Australia

I tend to find I can justify the entry by picking up things that I would otherwise had to have delivered (with the associated potage and packaging costs).

You do have to be a bit organised though.

As regards stuff for sale, it can be very hard finding firms actually selling things 'off the shelf' at the show. Demon Tweeks and Peter Lloyd being the obvious exceptions.

also... they've sold me one that isn't the most expensive, but does do everything I wanted it to do.

On a related note. I bought an extinguisher (from Demon Tweaks as it happens) a while ago and it could do with a service now. Trouble is it's an OMP electrically fired one and the only advice I have managed to get so far is to send it back to OMP for service. Since they are in Italy, that seems a bit excessive.

So any suggestions on how to get my extinguisher serviced without it costing a fortune? (It's AFFF if that makes a difference).

I have Nomex long johns and long sleeved shirts. I can sell them for £15 each. I brought a few boxes of these things from Arrows Formula 1 Team at their liquidating auction. I use them. They are good quality! Send me a PM if you want any more details. I can send them recorded delivery.

And on the subject of plumbed in or not.

The task of the marshalls in the event of your car catching fire is to get you out first, put fire out second.

Your AFFF plumbed in extinguisher will be a lot of use if the nozzles are pointing at the wrong place - ie: the fire is on the underside of your car as your gearbox seals have given up, spraying gear oil over your nice hot chimney.

Or your fuel tank has ruptured.

How many nozzles are you going to fit? Where are you going to put them?
And don't be silly pointing one at yourself.

The idea of the extinguishant is to remove the main oxidising agent from the fire. And if my knowledge of this planet and it's inhabitants is correct, we all need oxygen to breathe, so spraying yourself with the extinguisher may not make you the sharpest tool in the box.

In the old days of BCF Halon, if you did that, you might as well make sure that they've got the casket ready for you. Halon will remove all oxygen from your lungs and you will suffocate.

There was an argument recently, that as the circuits met their safety requirement with marshalls equipped with fire extinguishers, it would not be necessary for cars to carry them. Something to do with one set of rules in the blue book contradicting another.

But that's another story.

Good post...

I race a Triumph Spitfire, after playing "unleash your fire extinguisher and see where I can point it", I decided to get a plumbed in one..

So here's the plan..

I'm going to have one nozzle in the engine bay pointing at the engine. (seems about sensible)

and even though I have that fire proof bulkhead behind me, I saw a spitfire go into the wall at Rockingham last year and the back end disappear. My fuel tank is on that boot floor. So I'm going to have one roughly level with the back of the drivers seat pointing at that fireproof bulkhead/rear window..

3rdly... I also am sitting next to a fibreglass gearbox tunnnel. Although it is sealed I admit. the third will be pointing at my lower body. Probably from actually level with my waist, under the dash, at my lower body.

A Spitfire isn't that big ! So if anyone ever has cause to pull that handle.. I am aware that the car will probably just turn into a big ball of foam.

But at least I'll feel safe !
