Also is there goood prize money in F1 as I know the IRL and Cart championships both have good prize money...

freud has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
I think Massa, Webber, Sato and Yoong are actually paying for their drives.

I watched an interview with Webber last year where he said he was being 'paid' approx $200,000 per year as a tester for Benetton. I would assume he is still being paid, but obviously sponsors contribute that amount and more.

As far as I am aware it's Yoong's Malaysian sponsorship to Minardi that gets him the drive. How much it is I have no idea but without it he would not be driving the car, that's for sure!

I don't know if this is still valid, but few years ago I came across an article that was explaining how everything in F1 has it's price. It was giving some examples like the driver that leads first 10 or 15 laps get $47000, and so on. The conclusion was that the driver who gets a 'grand slam' - pole, leading whole race, fastest lap and wins the race gets app. $950000.
Don't know for other teams, but McLaren and Ferrari used to award their drivers $100000 for every point they win.
So, if you would drive for one of those two, grab a 'grand slam' you'd be richer for almost $2000000.

F1 Racing mag did a value for article at christmas which had the drivers approximate salaries in it. They reckon Kimi was only paid £70,000 for his first year, now that was a bargain. Montoya only got £2.5 million as well. When you compare these to JV's £10 million it is easy to see how the cah becomes so displaced within the sport.

Not such dumb move if you consider what he would otherwise have to pay Honda for their engines. I would say $1 million for a Honda engine deal was cheap!

Going slightly OT, but I heard somewhere that David Richards said that a quarter of the BAR budget was going to JV's salary... which would mean that BAR's overall budget is $84 million, which was more like Minardi's league, looking at figures for team budgets recently. I'm confused...

is there anyone underpaid? There's a reason why they get all those money freud.

PS: Come on come on! All of them are overpaid, even Yoong. Actually they should PAY big bucks for their cars, tyres, various fuels etc plus salaries for the crew if the really-really want a Drivers Championship.

It's funny to see the long-term contracts - which increase substantially year after year - drivers cashing their bucks now. Those are widely overpaid and laughing themselves sick probably. Villeneuve and especially Irvine. Those will be out or cut in half - at least - next year.

Victim of such a high-rise contract fell Fisichella. Last year earning something like $12 million or even more in his sentence-to-racing-life contract with Flavio, now back down to $5 million in his new contract with Eddie. Trulli in a similar situation now at the Renault. When those guys could have profited from a few Ferarri-Williams-McLaren guys stepping down they could have made themselves easily double or triple wages. Same goes for Heidfeld who apperantly hasn't got a manager who can get something more from Peter "Scrooge" Sauber.

Some other things are noteworthy in this list, like i.e. the huge amount of money HHF has gotten from Arrows. Tom must have wanted him dearly when these figures are really trustworthy. Another one is Kimi's deal, where Ron is paying quite a lot for the youngster. Especially if you compare that to the laughable first contract salary Williams are paying Montoya. Epect him to break to the top 3 when his contract is renewed at the end of this season.

Confronted with these marvelous (and rather uncertain) numbers -- as one is with football players, basketball players, ice hockey players, etc. etc. -- I think it's as well to remember one essential point: The people who own the sports do not pay their 'stars' one penny more than they believe they will make off them, and actually allow themselves a nice margin on the top besides.

We can argue about the judgement involved in this spend money to make money logic -- perhaps Eddie and Jacques have not lately contributed to the bottom line in the way their salaries might suggest -- and perhaps, as with so much in the kwazy world of commerce and finance, it's largely a matter of a collective (and potentially fragile) illusion (or delusion)... But, all in all, if we want to get outraged about money, start at the top.

Of course it's hard to think of F1 drivers in the same frame of reference as factory workers, say, but the structural relationship is the same; they do not own the means by which the wealth is produced, and their interest is to maximize the amount the owners pay them. Those who do own those means want to maximize the amount they make off the labour (!) of their drivers, designers, managers, technicians, and so forth. They do not, I repeat, pay their subordinates more than they think they will make off these assets.

That said, I thnik Heidfeld is grossly undercompensated, but considering the owner in this case -- Peter Sauber seems like a decent sort, from what I've read -- I'd say that some kind of decent equilibrium has been reached there.

Surely Luca or Frank must be crazy when they could get some other drivers for free. (Also Pablo must be completely out of his minds since he could easily find a better paid job)

What a bargain Montoya and Fisichella are at their current salaries!

Most overpaid: Villeneuve (laughable given he has trouble beating Panis) Barichello (A paid slave- what a contradiction!).
