Anyone got any idea's

My 10D packed up at Snetterton yesterday.

About half through the 3rd Touring Car Race I was snapping went to check the last batch photo's and I all got was a blank screen. So changed memory card's and battries still the same, even tried a friends card still the same.

I tried it again when I got home still the same, luckly it is still under warranty so I will be on the phone to Dixons later today arranging for it to sent of repair.

My first thought was that it's a problem with writing the image to card, however photo's. Anyone got any further thought's?

When you say blank screen do you mean that you can't view any of the menu setting or just that the pictures were coming out blank. If the former then the memory card won't make any difference - you can navigate the menus without even having a card in it. If it's that then sounds like the screen itself has gone.

If you just mean that your pictures came out black then assuming you didn't leave the lens cap on it sounds like a problem with the CCD sensor.

The screen is fine as I can get the menu's and review images from earlier in the day. I am just waiting for the service line to open so I can give them a ring.

Could be the lens and not the body ?

If not that then maybe the mirror is stuck ?

Could be the shutter has packed up, or the mirror. Try it with some different lenses, and those lenses on another body if you can, that will narrow it down.

I will lay money on it being the shutter mechanism. Mine went on my 10D back in 2005 in the middle of a meeting at Donington. Everything sounded like it6 was working, I tried changing both batteries, new cards etc but all I got was shots of a black cat in a coal cellar with its eyes shut...i.e. black. I cant remember what they are guaranteed for shutter actuation wide but its not a huge amount in the context of constant use every weekend. Mine was fixed fairly swiftly but it wasnt ever quite the same again and finally died pretty much totally at that years Walter Hayes (admittedly it did drown)

Well its gone of repair but they take there time repairing it. As I went out and invested in a 30D at the weekend. I was going to upgrade over the winter anyway. I had it at Harewood yesterday and I am very impressed and you can tell the difference between the 2 models. When the 10D comes back I will let you know what the fault was.

Sounds like the shutter mechanism to me too - Mine packed up a fortnight ago.

Unfortunately this won't help much since you've already sent the camera in for repair (it's probably next to mine!) but for a quick check in future switch the shutter speed to "bulb" and see if the shutter opens up and stays open when you press and hold the release.

You know what? My shiny new E-1 did this yesterday, taking family happy snaps in Stratford on Avon...
Pulled EVERYTHING off that's supposed to, cleaned every contact I could see/reach.

And off she went again, good as gold.

Seemed to be a lens contact issue.
Despite the lens not having been removed since it was working perfectly???

I had a blank review screen, no menus, nothing, not even AF. It felt like a dead camera... Though the shutter would fire.

So, strip, clean, reassemble. First check to do. I guess.

Has the repaired one come back yet? I have heard of Canon taking MONTHS to return stuff?

10D doesn't use SD, it uses CF.
same as my E-1.

The saga carries on, when I got home from work on Thrusday there was a card from the Post Office saying that I had a package to collect. So Friday morning it was off to the Post Office to pick up my package which I thought was some tickets for Oulton Park next Monday but Oh no it was my 10D.

So I came home, open up everything up, had a look at the details of the repair turns out they have changed the shutter. Anyway thought I had better give it a quick test started snapping only to find that the screen has gone. So guess what its off back for repair again, at least I have my 30D.
