Best Sportscar Driver
Seeing there is some banter going on over the qualities of some sporstcar drivers, lets have a discussion as to who is the best sportscar driver of recent years and perhaps of all time!
For me recently and hopefully again soon it has been Alan McNish. Looking back then Jacky Ickx has to be the obvious choice. What do you think |

In the last 4-5 years, I would have to go for Kristensen. In the period of the late 80's/early 90's, without a doubt, Andy Wallace is my man. Prior to that, Ickx, with the less successful (but no less brilliant) Stuck and Wollek.
For mechanical sympathy though, Mr. Bell took some beating..... |

If we are talking 'best ever' a certain Mr S. Moss springs to mind.

im Biased, for me Oliver Gavin what he did in the Saleen in 2001 in qualifying was incredible knocked 3.5 seconds off the previous best time in 2000 of the crack Oreca Viper car of Beretta, Weddlinger and Dupey.

Just has to be Ickx, I bet even now he could blow the doors of most of the current crop.
Talking off which, Wallace I think is as sound as they come, or Lammers always charging or Lehto for LM 95. of the elder statesman beside Ickx I would go for Vic Elford, one of the best all round drivers ever, Pedro Rodriguiz a master in the 917 or Moss for his brillant merc drives. |

I'd give it to Ickx, too! Moss was always the rabbit, the objective was to break the opposition.

My additions to this list:
Dalmas (just for standing up to Berger in '99) Mario (for that stirring Ferrari 512 win at Sebring, was it '71?) Pescarolo Myles White Although Ickx for '69 is still my all-time win favourite. In non-enduro sportscars I'd say Surtees, Donohue, Follmer and whoever drove a factory McLaren. |

46, NME... He's 46...
Stirling Moss was the first, then Jacky Ickx... For a short time in the '80s, though, Stefan Bellof was the world's greatest, setting a record at the Nurburgring in '83 that still stands. Derek Bell and Hans Joachim Stuck can certainly stand shoulder to shoulder with them. Today, I'd give Andy Wallace a slight edge over McNish, Magnussen, or Butch Leitziger. |

Kristensen. He is already a 4 time LM winner. He could easily go on to be the most sucessful LM driver of all time. Plus the fact he's rather quick!

Dalmas is a very good driver (and fast) and to win at Le Mans three times is very difficult, but I believe that maybe he is one step down of Kristensen for example. Last edited by E46; 11 Dec 2002 at 20:10. |

Great topic. Hans Stuck isn't a name mentioned so far...
Off the top of my head. Rodrigeuz, Stuck, Mass, Dalmas, Kristenson, Lehto and Ickx. |

Didnt we all have this discussion recently?
Il go for Ickx actual but Bellof would have been, if he had ever driven sportscars again (I expect his Ferrari contract for 86 would have f0rbid him). I also think Mike Thackwell in the Sauber in 87 was one of the most underated. I remember Jesus Pareja more for that day he hit a manhole cover at Montreal in 1990 and nearly had his face burned off in the ensueing crash... IIRC he had changed the race before from wearing an open face lid. If your talking national championships, heres a couple of names some of the aussies might remember - Bap Romano and Rusty French.. |
