Kelvin Burt's crash in 1996 was tremendous.
The start at Snettetton in 1993 was a big one too. I can't think well right now, so more to come. |

Charlie Cox - Thruxton, 1995.
Kelvin Burt's crash at Oulton Park was a very, very nasty one. Also remember Alain Menu almost ending up in the lake at Oulton Park one year, he was definitely down by the reeds by the time the car stopped (backwards) - they've since put barriers down that whole stretch of the circuit, so it's unlikely anything as dramatic as Kelvin's or Alain's moments will ever be repeated. |

Kelvin's crash at Oulton has to be the worst I've ever witnessed, I was stood at Knickerbrook. Certainly not the sort of thing I want to see when I go watching racing. A friend of mine was marshalling that day and said that Kelvin was actually trapped underneath the steering wheel. I think he was very lucky that day, it could have been a lot worse. I'm actually quite surprised that it took Menu's excursion towards the lake for the armco to be extended, I'd expected changes after Burt's crash because didn't he hit the very end of the armco and so that seemed to add to the force of the whole crash.
As for Menu, that was actually quite a graceful looking slide towards the lake I'm sure this topic has been done before and it's one I always approach with a fair bit of trepidation because sadly you always will get some people who just want to go to a motorsport event to see a big crash. At Thruxton BTCC I stood behind a group of lads who were discussing what a boring day it was because they hadn't seen any serious crashes or anyone getting killed, you can't even refer to people like that as motorsport fans, just mindless idiots The same goes for the videos that Chris mentioned, I simply don't understand the mindset of a person who wants to watch a video of nothing but big crashes. |

Couldnt agree more. Big crashes are inevitable in motorsport and may look spectacular but they are no substitute for close, safe racing. People who go to motorsport events hoping to see a big crash really have no idea.

Although I don't like to see too many accidents, both Charlie Cox's shunt at Thruxton and the Radisich/Watts startline shunt at Brands in '95 were probably the most spectacular.
As well as being dangerous, shunts cost a huge amount to repair! When teams (especially at lower levels) can't afford to repair thier cars, they leave the series and grid numbers suffer! |

Hoy and Bailey at GP support was the funniest, because taking out a team-mate is stupid.

I think it's better to talk about the less serious crashes people.
My first race I attended at Knockhill in 1999, where half the field ended up going all ways down Duffus and up to the chicane!!! |

Those crash videos you can get, ie - Havoc, Car Wars, are all fine because they assure you that no one was seriously injured in any of the crashes. Buying a video to see the crashes on it is no problem to me.
I will admit that i am interested when there is a big accident in F1, Touring Cars or whatever. At first i am like - wow that was a big one. I always expect the driver to get out, and usually they do - ie Burti's somersault in F1 in Germany this year. If i realise that a driver hasnt emerged from the wreckage then I am not happy and I am worried. Luckily i havent experienced an actual death live on TV since 1994. So i am easily able to comment on what I think were the 'best' crashes in the BTCC: The best one i saw live was Gavin Pyper's barrel-roll down cascades in 2000. One's i have seen on TV include Tarquini in 94 at Knockhill, Burt in 96 at Oulton and Tarquini/Plato in 2000 at Croft. |

I think Matt Neals in a Mazda in 94, was one of the worst ever, I remeber seeing Manuel Reuter have a big one infront of me at a DTM race one year and that was quite horrific, fortunately both of these drives escaped pretty much unheart and have done some brilliant racing since.

The crash Matt Neal suffered in '94 injured him badly didn't it? He didn't appear again that season.
Plato/Tarquini at croft 2000 Thompson at Brands 2000 Eugene O' brien Thruxton 1994 Coxy at Thruxton 1995 They are probably the worst ever crashes. |

The second shunt that Tommy had looked like a big one, by looking at the car damaged, but we didn't actually see it happen on our TV screens as the race was broadcast live.
His shunt in round 2 was a harmless spin into the wall. |

Accidents in practice.
The Arena run Laguna of Mr Spence.
His off at Oulton was the worst i have witnessed in practice for a time, The one to tickle me,Mr Muller ,warm up Brands 99, a harmless roll. One to add to the bacon he had earlier. |

I think Muller's little roll at Brands could probably go down as one of the most embarassing for a driver Or at least he could compete with the Toyota boys in '93 - a lesson in how not to make yourself popular with the team
As for Spence, I was at Oulton that day and I've still not worked out quite how he managed to park that car the way he did. One of the most worrying aspects of that was not just the fact that he put the car in a spectator area, he put it in the disabled viewing area. I certainly think the consequences would have been a lot worse had that happened on race day. |
