da Matta injured in testing
Cristiano da Matta was airlifted to a Wisconsin hospital Thursday afternoon after striking a deer during Champ Car testing at Elkhart Lake, Wis.
The 32-year-old Brazilian was knocked unconscious by the impact but his vital signs were good and he was stable. According to an eyewitness, da Matta was heading for Turn 6 at Road America when the deer ran out in front of him and struck the right front of his RuSport Lola. The deer caromed into the cockpit and tore off the roll hoop as da Matta smashed into the tire barrier with his foot still planted on the throttle. Safety crews extracted him on a backboard and applied an oxygen mask as he was taken to a helicopter. I hope he recovers ok. |

Wow, what a shame for Da Matta, still according to the report over at speed he was in a stable condition as he was taken to the hospital. Hopefully he will be back in time for Denver.

Sounds alarming. Could be quite nasty. Doesn't say how the deer is either? (Unless that's what they put the oxygen mask on and put in a helicopter) Last edited by Hazard; 3 Aug 2006 at 22:31. |

That's peculiar...........a deer on the racetrack?
Never heard of that one before. Would be interesting to see a video of that... |

Last time I was karting a rabbit ran onto to the track. Fairly predictable what the out come was.
I guess racing between the woods and amongst the wild life and the fact there hasn't been a race there for a bit, it would startle them. *talking crap mode off* Of course I hope da matta recovers quickly. Seems he was very lucky to not be seriously hurt. Last edited by luke; 3 Aug 2006 at 23:14. |

He's bloody lucky he wasn't killed. A deer in the cockpit and tearing off the roll hoop could very easily do the same to your head.
Glad to hear he is OK. |

Unconfirmed, but I'm hearing that it's quite serious.

I hope he makes it out okay, I'm glad he survived like it was mentioned that could of easily been his head and not the roll hoop.
I cant even imagine hitting a deer in a racecar, a friend of mine hit one in his regular car and caused a fair bit of damage and he was pretty badly hurt a led of the deer struck him. |

It's certainly not the first time someone has hit a deer at Road America; they are a regular menace. But I think it is the first time for such a high performance car.
Hang in there Cristiano, we're pulling for your recovery. |

I just saw this on cnn...came over here to see if anyone had an update. Where I used to kart, a guy about my age hit a deer in a 125cc shifter. Game over. From experience deer are one of the most dangerous things you can hit...really high cg and really dense main mass

Deer are the most dangerous animals in the USA, responsible for at least 150 deaths a year.
Latest word is a second scan was done after surgery and no further damage was found. He'll be in an induced coma for 24-36 hours and after that they will really know bad his condition is. At a minimum he'll be in the hospital for a few weeks. With these types of injuries, he'll be out of driving for a good half a year, therefore the rest of the season. Fortunately the fulltime CCWS medical team was right there and got him sussed out quickly. Had this been a F1, IRL, etc. test session he probably would be dead. |

Terrible news.
I have been away for a few days and come back and find this , very upsetting. The Stefan Johansson accident was in qualifying for the 1986 Austrian Grand prix (I think he broke his nose and thats all ?) my prayers and thoughts are with Cristiano at this time and hope he makes a speedy recovery |

Johansson must have been '87, as that's the only year he drove for McLaren.

Unconfirmed reports around the web (don't you just hate that you have to rely on "gossip" with something as important as this...oh well, you'd hope people won't like at times like these...) states that Da Matta has been put into an medically induced coma and the next 24hrs are critical.
Which gives a chilling reminder to the last time the term "artificial coma" was used back in Germany, 2001. I hope Christiano manages to recover from this. WHATEVER happens I wish that the Road America Champcar event be renamed the Christiano Da Matta Grand Prix, and I hope it will be as a get well soon gesture, nothing more.... |
