DTM weight rules changed for final round

The DMSB has altered the way weights are applied for the last round, to ensure Audi don't take any advantage from having withdrawn from the event.

Lap 46's positions have been used to define the weights which means the base weights for Hockenheim are:

CarYearWeight
Mercedes20071075kg
Audi20071065kg
Mercedes20061060kg
Audi20061055kg
Mercedes20051055kg
Audi20051030kg

Sounds like someone's trying to wind Audi up don't you think?

Can you tell me, why? Audi isn't FWD hatchback like Seat in WTCC.

A maximum of ten kilos may be unloaded and the maximum placement weight a car may be loaded with amounts to 15 kilos. Should both manufacturers’ cars of a generation fail to score points, both may unload 5 kilos – provided that they already had to load or unload placement weight, for one of the previous rounds. This regulation is valid from the sixth round of the season, held at Mugello. In the first five rounds, the placement-weight steps amounted to plus/minus seven kilograms. At season halftime, DMSB reduced the placement-weight steps upon the recommendation of the DTM Commission.
Not the greatest translation.

So are the Audis 5kg heavier than they would have been?

Audi won't get the benefit of those lost positions, but Mercedes got the benefit of them withdrawing! Although, to be fair, the benefit was small as they were going to win anyway and the Audi title challengers were out.

They should have gone with the result as it was. This no worse than trying to grab eighth in WTCC. A couple of years back someone retired with the sole purpose of losing weight (or not gaining it) in Super GT IIRC.

Audi shouldn't be exempt just because they had a hissy fit.

Although I probably shouldn't debate this any further as ballast regulations confuse me.

Another mess for the DTM. It's a shame, it used to be good back in the Larini/Nannini Alfa days. But this year the racing's usually been poor, team orders have been rife and I've lost almost all interest in it.

Neither should the Mercs benefit because they started ramming the Audis off, it's the DTM, not Burnout 3 ....
