Plating over a sunroof - help needed please
Morning,
Were running a VW Golf in a Club MSV championship this season. We have riveted a steel plate to the roof and welded it inside the car with 1" welds about 2"s apart. Will this be acceptable or does it need one continuous weld? The Blue book stipulates it needs to be welded but not how. Many thanks Andy |

I think it would be OK if strong. I have in my IROC-Z two glass roof panels that I had to get fabricated in steel and welded in much like the old Tomcats and it has never been questioned. I am sure the guys who did it wouldnt have contiously welded it or it would have warped like hell. Once dum dummed up and painted it can look quite neat, mine does. Infact if I had to replace a sunrook thats how i would do it, cut the plate about an inch oversize, get it rolled so a nice curve to suit the roof and turn the edges in and drop it in the hole and weld from inside, make a feature of it so the shape of the sun roof is still there and dum dum the gap.

I've raced with a simple plate riveted to the roof for several years. No scrutineer has ever questioned it and it's not moved at all.
It's damn ugly though so you might want to do it nicely like Al suggests |

My Rover SD1 road car is now a race car, removed the sun roof, riveted an over size plate over the aperture, been OK for scrutineering on several occasions, so yours should be fine.

That'll be fine I'm sure. I too have had cars with a riv only roof and all is ok in terms of scrutineering.
In later years I've been more particular, but in a probably illogical quest for rigidity and aesthetics. S. |

Thanks for everyones advice.
We have gone for the rivet around the outside every inch and then welded inside at inch gaps. Then seam sealed around the edge and the the rivets themselves to stop water getting in. The cars black so we painted satin black and it does actually look okay. Cheers everyone Last edited by Torque of the Devil; 10 Mar 2010 at 11:26. |

Mine is also a metallic black car, with the panel painted in satin black, great colour for covering up crap. My local Halfords have never sold so much of the stuff until my extended arches were also painted with the stuff.

Satin black should definetly be on the motorists best friends list.
