Yes, with Jorg Muller at wheel.
New front/rear air-intanke, new front spoiler, and changed the position of the exausts, compare with Chicago Auto Show car. Also there are the 3 lights position for ACO racing :-P |

It's a sick car but it's not a Sportscar. Will this ever race at LM? Wasn't the last M3 in both 6 and 8 cylinder form frowned upon by the ACO and not invited.

That really is a pretty car. I forsee good things performance-wise. Plus, RHR is no slouch, I expect a car capable of winning races.

How is it not a sportscar? What else would it be?

ALMS program was announced,
and Racingworld.it heard at Spa LMS, something about 2 chassis in Europe for LMS (and 24h Nurburgring, 24h Spa)... |

I would describe it as more of a silhouette race car. Better suited for N24 than LM24.

It's not a silhouette car (which, incidentally, aren't allowed at the N24 except for a few old DTM and V8 stars cars that have been grandfathered in). If it's built for GT2 it's just as much a sportscar as an RSR is.

You're a relatively recently joined member, I see, do a few searches for BMW M3s. We've had this debate pretty much every year..... It's a saloon, or a touring car, or a Tesco's weekly shopping runner. My last word. (Everyone else breathes a sigh of relief). Last edited by Aysedasi; 15 Jul 2008 at 13:01. |

It's going to run in a championship for sportscars, so I consider the matter closed too

Its beautiful thats what it is.
But its a GT car, not a touring car or a *ahem* shopping trolley...... It will race against Ferraris and Porsche's etc, not Leons etc. And also, its an M3GTR.....clue is in the name, none of the other GTR's ever ran with tourers, always up against GT's. dont wish to start an argument, but clearly, its a GT car Simon |

Whatever it's called is immaterial.
The fact that it may be permitted to run against real sportscars, is immaterial. It's still a shopping car. It may look lovely and I might give my eye teeth for one, but that doesn't change what it really is...... Oops. My last (last) word. (Probably) (Maybe) |

Well, if what a car does on the street defines what it is, that makes things interesting. After all, since Nick Mason took his kids to school in a Ferrari 250 GTO, what is it then?

What a beautiful car! So low to the ground, nice looking "grill" and cool, O shaped headlights.
It's a sportscar now. |

I would consider the M3 Coupe to be as much a Gran Turismo 2+2 as a 612 Scaglietti or the upcoming California.

Anyone care to add a poll to this thread? "Is the BMW M3 a GT or touring car?" Just answer yes or no, then the matter will finally be resolved, at least here on ten-tenths. Assuming of course we are particapting in a democratic forum that is.
Just a idea... |

However as the can of worms has been well and truly opened and the ring pull thrown away I think it's gone slightly past yes or no. Firstly from a marketing perspective the road-going M3 has moved so far away from the original concept of the original (the E30, I would willingly gargle rusty nails to own a cherished example!) with the current V8 powered incarnation that I just don't get the 'shopping trolly' analogy....sorry. The target market will quite rationally move from Ferrari to Porsche to BMW or even Lotus (watch this space...) if they feel the car delivers, so what if the car was originally designed for four seats? Look at the success the CSL version of the previous model was...no rear seats? Carbon roof? Price premium? Sign me up! Secondly....just look at it! The side profile is strikingly similar to a DBR9 in my opinion and looks just fabulous, plus it will obviously be developed to go like stink, all good! I think the coming years for sportscar racing worldwide are going to be incredibly exciting, manufacturers are getting weary of the hideous expense and dictatorialism of F1 and with touring cars becoming a stale sideshow (disclaimer: all IMO!) this is the arena where they will be able to truly prove new technology and we will all surely benefit from the great racing on show! |
