Volunteering on the day

Hi all.

Trainee marshal, local to Snetterton.

I volunteered (BRSCC-EA) for a ton of events at the beginning of the year, and then my working hours changed and my house fell down, so all my plans went awry and I had to tell Rodders to scratch me out while I reorganised.

It's now well into the second half of the season, events are looming that I want to work, and I still haven't formally resubmitted my availability (it's here, on my desk). However, I was informed by the clerk at a recent event that if I found myself available to volunteer, I'd be more than welcome just to present myself on the day.

Question: Does this advice apply to higher-profile national series like Britcar, BTCC etc, or is it not really the done thing? For example, I'm now free at short notice to volunteer for BTCC this weekend. Is it worth me showing up, or will I be politely waved away at the gate?

Thanks in advance.

Larger events can sometimes be over-subscribed with marshals so contact the relevant chief marshal and see what can be done. Also for large events such as BTCC there's usually a load of additional temporary/non-circuit security staff so you may have problems getting in without a ticket.

Ha... the last problem anyone had last year was getting in without a ticket, but let's not go there!

Thanks for the advice; I'm thinking if no one's about Friday I might just buy a ticket for Saturday, seek out the boss and see if he's got a job for me on Sunday!

Or you could just scrounge a ticket off another marshal (call/text from the gate if they don't let you in) as I don't think you should have to pay to marshal!!!

I've heard Snett is usually short for marshals. Even BTCC (was last year) so the help would be appreciated especially if you're local.
Ideally you should find out from a local marshal who's Chief Marshal for the event and inform them you'll be turning up on the day.

PM me before tomorrow evening if you haven't sorted a scrounge!
