What happened to them?
We all know why the BTCC lost viewers in the late nineties. However a thought accured to me the other day. Where have they gone?. With the series growing again do they still even bother to watch the races? if i had stopped watching the BTCC say........at the end of 1998, and then saw a race from last year for example, Brands Hatch Indy or Donington, i would be impressed.
What do you think? |

On Saturday afternoon many are likely to be watching football either at a ground or via their TV. On a race day is when you might think the audience would grow. But I am amazed when you see the crowds BTCC gets then see the crowds at a Bike meeting (anywhere) and you get jealous. Bike meetings still pull some of the biggest crowds and audiences when shown on TV. Formula 1 is even losing audiences due to a number of well known reasons. Perhaps what audiences need is excitment, danger and unpredictability. In the first instance perhaps the profile of BTCC could be lifted. Getting the Media to report on it like F1, Rallying and Football. Who saw a BTCC driver's contract being mentioned on news at ten?

I think that the main problem is that even though the touring car championship is one of the most thrilliing things on tv to watch there are many viewers that will sit down and turn on the box and flick to say BBC 1 and yust see yet another car race there is no real difference between one race to another and the majority of "sunday tv viewers" will just switch off and watch something that has different material in each episode not just "car racing round a track x amount of times"

I think F1 is to blame for the general drop in attention motorsport gets from the casual viewer.
I don't mean this in a bad way, but they mostly can't tell the difference between one form of motorsport and the other. F1's got boring so they can't be bothered turning on the set when it says "Car Racing" in the listings. Last edited by touringlegend; 12 Feb 2003 at 16:25. |
