Minardi - Toyota ?
Just in maybe new owner's and new motor . "the Boss" might have fun next year
The small Minardi team is on the verge of having new owners. At the moment, Paul Stoddart and Bernie Ecclestone are the main stockholders in the team but a group of businessmen from Northern Italy are looking to purchase the shares of Bernie Ecclestone and probably those of Paul Stoddart as well. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the deal is almost concluded, which might explain why Giancarlo Minardi wasn't at Indianapolis. The founder of the small Italian team may have stayed in Italy to discuss some final details of the transaction. Still according to Gazzetta dello Sport - who have good sources in the F1 world - Minardi and Toyota are supposedly in negotiations for an engine supply deal for 2004. We should learn more about all this in a few weeks... F1-live |

<sigh> I always fancied a Ferrari-Minardi. Again... Oh well, Toyota would do too, if that rumor is true. Nevermind that, but Pauls Stoddard not running Minardi is indeed great news! <keeps the fingers crossed>

The engine shouldnt be the answer to minardi problems, unless at mates rates. The cosworth they have this year is meant to be same as one in back of the jag, and it seams to do ok with Webber.
They need some help with chassis. They tested current cars back to back with old Arrows chassis from last year and they set similar times, and they werent stunning last year... |

Well, actually the engines were not identical. Jordan's is 1 year older and Minardi's 2 (or evolution/steps, whatever, but you got the idea).

But a Minardi-Ferrari would be interesting. No guarantee it wouldn't go the same way as Sauber who have had little to show for their Ferrari engines.

Ok thought same engine, but in generations there is going to be little relative difference, 10bhp or something. Most of time better with 1yr old proven engine.
Always find it funny every year when teams announce an engine 10kg lighter with 50bhp more, if thats the case then about 1000000bhp and 1kg. Just go pop start of season so strengthen it all back up again, so from one year to year prob 5bhp gain and 5kg less. Gains in low friction materials. Anyway... sure its the chassis, but the likes of Keisa aint helping, but if Jos the Dos is doing as well as he is you just wonder what a decent pilot could do. |

Sauber have actually done quite well out of their year-old Ferrari engines, frequently beating works teams who've spent a lot on new engines, albeit by luck this year.
Having ultra-powerful engines isn't always the answer though - Minardi had Ferrari engines in the early 90s when the engine was accepted as being better than the Ferrari chassis, and never got a podium with it. Personally I'd be sad to see Paul Stoddard go. I like the guy, he's an enthusiast who's put his moeny on the line, deeply cares about F1 and the team, has given some great young drivers the chance, and is always willing to say what he thinks. |

It would be surprising to me if the deal is accomplished:
as I told in other posts Minardi seems to serve a noble mission in this Company-dominated F1: that of last squad. this explains why any time Minardi seemed destined to disappear, someone has punctually rosen to save them, whereas each time they seemed close to a strong upgrade (official engines, for instance) every time the deal has misteriously failed. Let's wait and see Last edited by climb; 30 Sep 2003 at 12:47. |
