BBC Sports Personalities of the Year
There is no chance of a motor racing sportsman winning this year, but our sport has done pretty well in the past.
1959: John Surtees 1961: Stiring Moss 1973: Jackie Stewart 1986: Nigel Mansell 1992: Nigel Mansell 1994: Damon Hill 1996: Damon Hill http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tv_a...03/3244608.stm The BBC site also talks about some who didn't win it including Graham Hill, Jim Clark and James Hunt http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tv_a...03/3173902.stm Odd that Graham didn't win it, because he features a lot on old footage of the awards. However he was a fantastic spokesman for the sport and a great speaker in general (oh and top laugh!). |

Shame that James Hunt didn't win the award back in 1976 having won the championship that year and that season is still regarded as one of the best in Formula One history.

Well I was questoning the use of the word personality for one of them above. '94 Damon got a lot of support for the way he dealt with the season.
Interestingly on Nigel, Damon and Henry Cooper are teh only people to have won it twice. Anyway, I couldn't find a list of overseas winners. Has this ever been won by a motor racing star? And has a motor racing team ever won the team prize? Last edited by Adam43; 6 Dec 2003 at 10:12. |

Rather unfair, presumably you're not an RL fan. Speaking as someone with an interest in both F1 and RL, I'd bet there would be more recognition outside of both sports of Wilkinson than e.g. Ralph Firman or Justin Wilson. |

I think a team can have a personality, despite the inclusion of the word person in it. Hence the passion that Ferrari enjoys. Teams can be a great personality as all the members contribute to it. Surely this is why most people like certain teams - because of the personality, or the way they do things. |

Perhaps more astonishing is the fact that the last motor racing team to win the team award was BRM in 1962. One would have thought that winning 15 out of 16 races in 1988 would have been worthy of commemoration, but it was Olympic year and the men's hockey team's unexpected gold swung it their way.
But how on earth the British equestrian team beat McLaren in 1984 is a total mystery. Perhaps they had a jump-off? |

Just noticed there is a more general discussion on the sports personality here: http://tentenths.com/forum/showthrea...threadid=46832 rather than this specific F1 past and present.

Besides, personality is being a person, or behavior that characterizes a person. Nominating/voting 2 racing teams, is a kinda insulting to persons who actually were part of those teams. |

We can vote for the best BBC personality of the year ever!
I only caught one number 0901 198 1101. Damon, a man who behaved with great dignity in 1994 to lead the Williams team. Doing the sport a favour in a difficult year. And then two years later clinched the title. |

I think Damon should be considered for the best ever Sports Personality. Totally agree with what Adam wrote.

Also, how about Valentino Rossi for overseas personality? Not only did the Beeb actually show some MotoGP (when they could be bothered), but Vale has LOTS of personality
