Moto GP - Portugal
Today I watched the MotoGP from Portugal and was puzzled by the waving of White Flags at every Marshals post for several laps.
I didn't notice a slow bike or non-competition vehicle on the track, so what was it used for? |

I didn't see the race, but I might hazard a guess that it had started raining. I heard a couple of weeks ago that the MotoGP organisers would signal a 'wet race' by having full-course whites. When the riders get a 'wet race' notification, under the new rules they can pit and swap on to a bike fitted with wet tyres.
If it wasn't a 'wet race' notification, I don't know why they were doing it?! Phill |

That could well be the right assumption!
It was a little damp - so the commentary team said. Thanks Phill |

Thats exactly it, although it confused the hell out of me to start with. With no radio to the riders (although they are allowed to use it!) i guess they needed some way of telling them, but why they need the OK from race control to change bikes is beyond me. Surely it's up to the rider and team to determine if and when to swap, and the rules quite clearly state they must return to the track with a different style of tyre, so it's not as if they could "cheat" using it.
Why they decided to use the "surrender" flag tho is beyond me... |

Clearly cost is not an issue for bike racing!

This year by using the white flag the riders have been given the option, whilst the white flag is diplayed, to enter the pits and change to their other bike which has been set up for wets. Mark! With bikes the white flag is only used for a non-competition vehicle and not a slow bike. |
