Murph Miffed
Excerpts taken from another website. 06/10/05 - "NZ motorsport driver Greg Murphy is upset over being snubbed by the NZ A1 Grand Prix team. Murphy lines up at Bathurst this weekend, defending his title, but he admits that he still yearns to race single seaters.
Murphy thought he might have been approached by the A1 group, but to no avail. He says no-one has phoned him, so they are obviously not interested in an older driver who competes in the tin tops or V8s. Murphy says he thought he might have been good enough to secure a test drive with the A1 team, but it is obviously not to be. However, NZ team boss Bob McMurray is indicating Murphy is still very much part of their plans. McMurray says they have talked about involving both Murphy and Scott Dixon, but only if all their schedules and plans fit together". Forget it Murph, and stick to what you do best |

Well have a look at Alex Yoong, he would have to be older or same age as Greg and he gets a drive in A1, so why can't Greg get a drive?

Mr Potato Head, stick to being a petulant sook: Plodding around in a second rate car this year: Generating more self publicity than Wayne Wakefield could have ever dreamed about: And being the Ch Seriously Pin Up Boy, [did you happen to see the BS RPM story of Murph & the RAAF fly boy, beering in each others pockets........] I'd pick Scott Dixon over Murph to drive the A1 car any day of the year. Having said that Halliday showed good car speed at Brands...... |

I was wondering when the next sook would be.... since he doesn't have a pre pubescent co-driver to defend any more he has been short on material to bleat about this year, but you can't keep a good whinger down, hey Spud !!

Doesn't Simon Wills have a better open-wheel record than Murph? At least it looks like Murph has a job next year....

Thats another thing, how long has it been since Murph has driven an open wheeler ?
Competing against some awesome talent from across the world and Murph is disapointed that Team NZ aren't banging down his door. Reality check |

There's no doubt the guy can drive an open wheeler!
But, on that token, guys who have been awya from the discipline for some time takwe a while to get back into it. I think he might have the right to feel disapointed, but not to whinge. As pointed out, you have Halliday, Dixon, and I'd put even put Wills ahead of him. Thats like Lowdnes having a whinge because he wasn't asked to drive for A1 Australia.... |

In fact he is the double defending champion!
Means nothing in open wheelers. You're also forgetting that Johnny Reid is a pretty handy single seat driver. |

Murph needs to realise that there is a lot of other talent in the world which is as yet unproved. These guys need a shot at success also, or we will end up with the 'old dinosaur' days of the 1980s were the same old guys get all the good drives. I applaud the A1 guys for going for young and widely unknown drivers. It should be used as a 'stepping stone' for a focussed European career. Is Murphy ready to move to Europe to pursue a formula racing career? I think not, life is surely far too comfortable here nowadays! |

I would have thought that one of the consequences of playing in the V8 game is that you make a conscious decision to take the security and adulation that comes with a regular tin top gig over the uncertainty and struggle of trying to "make it" as an international open wheeler driver. Having done that, you can hardly complain when the first names that spring to mind when considering a driver for the A1GP team are the guys doing the latter.....
That's why I hope James Courtney keeps doing what he is doing and doesn't end up driving supercars next year..there's plenty of time to do that later. |

are you fighting for honours? or upset he beat you to the title? senseless bashing of Greg Murphy is as pathetic as the guys who constantly bag Skaife and Ambrose. Greg Murphy drove very well in Formula Holden.. |

[QUOTE=D.R.T.]Why wouldn't Dixon be ready for a drive?
Brainfade, got my Dixons mixed with my Briscoes! And yes, Matt Halliday has been around motorsport for a while, but as for 'been around' as in age Murphy's 33 years old! He is 3 years away from F1 'retirement age' (unless you're Schumi!) Even though Halliday is almost past it also at 26, I am sure he has a better kick at Europe than Murphy and stand behind my comments. |

Murph, Skaife, Lowdnes, Ambrose, Wills, W. Davidson and many more are just some of the drivers who tried their hand at open wheelers and went tin top for whatever reason. Most of those listed are going to be comfortably employed for years to come, and I feel that the A1 drives should go to someone still trying to crack it in Europe.
The Hallidays/Dixons, and the Powers/Briscoes should get the gigs... mind you, I'd love to see Courtney and Davidson in the A1 AUS car. |
