Manning wants to be in Champ Car

How realistic are his chances? What rides are really out there for grabs?

Well, since he's an outstanding driver (IMO), any team would be lucky to have his services. Hopefully he can find a solid paying drive. Perhaps Walker could take him back and expand to three cars? I doubt it...

I would love to see Manning in champ car. I can't see Walker expanding to 3 cars as they are now trying to brand themselves as Team Australia more & hiring a British driver would go against that. Does anybody know what sponsorship he has & how much it is for? I think for this year if he could just get any seat that would be good but for next year he must surely be looking at a top drive with a squad like Newman/Haas or Forsythe. If he cant get that top drive then he should come back to Europe to try & get himself in GP2 or another top formula. He really needs to do that now before it is too late & it would be a shame to see a driver as talented as him not getting another shot as top level racing.

I still can't believe Ganassi were stupid enough to drop him from their IRL squad. He'd be a real asset to CCWS, he did well at Rockingham the other year. Hope he can sort something out.

He bent a lot of hardware, and destroyed some other hardware...

Ganassi's team in the other Series had many wallbangers during last year...it was an expensive season for them..and Briscoe had a lot of those accidents..

Manning didn't seem to fit in well with the predominantly oval series, and Tim Northcutt is right, he didn't do hinself any favours by smashing all those cars.

2003 in Champ Car Manning drove a Reynard against the predominantly Lola crowd and was usually quite fast. I think he would make a great return to the series. CTE-HVMshould sign him to run with Bremer.

An absolutely top class road and street racer, someone would be very wise to hire him. His several years in F3 over here, always in hugely underfunded teams, accompanied by an unnerring ability to succeed at the highest profile, highest pressure races suggests to me he would be an asset to any Champ Car team, particularly one looking to move from also-ran to someone to be taken notice of. Definitely a driver who can punch well above his weight.

Yes Manning did have some crashes last year, but when he was chucked out of the team he had scored more points than Scott Dixon-the 2003 champion. Doesnt that at least say something for the skills that he has?

I think that is says something about the backing he didn't have namely money (Toyota $'s were behind Briscoe) and past success in the series (you don't boot the 2003 champion, there might be a handful of fans who know who he is).

Nothing to add, really - Woolley said it all.

I see Darren as a swift and solid steerer. I just can't see him stepping into a series and wowing everyone with his mind-boggling pace.

Having said that, I would most certainly welcome him back to Champ Car - he would be a fantastic addition to the series.

Darren and Ryan seemed to get on really well at Ganassi - team mates again in '06 .....?

Perhaps that makes Darren's best bet is getting some development work on the '07 car. Sure he spends a year out of racing full-time but gets a lot of valuable info. Not sure such a role exists however but one can only hope that for once a guy's ability counts more than the money he brings

If only we could fast forward to '07.
I think Manning is a terrific racer and Mrs. mp356a & I would love to see him back in CCWS. His talent was wasted in the quasi all-oval series and I recall when he left us, it was only because he was not "season'd" enough to get a quality ride. It was always my impression that he'd have preferred to stay but things were a bit hairy at that time.
He's not the only young driver to suffer from that rocky time period in my opinion.
