Old Australian Circuits

I read a lot of posts here and people mention old tracks around the country. I started watching touring cars around the late 80's. I am familiar with tracks like lakeside, amaroo park, malalla. However tracks like Gnoo Blas are before my time.

Does anyone have any info on these old circuits? ie track maps, or locations. Maybe web site links. I like to know about this sort of history. What makes these tracks hold so many fond memories to people? Everyone on here seems to recall them with fondness.

Aint too shabby.

I think Falcadore has some explaining to do with regards to the QR map corner naming!

Possibly because they were a part of our youth and upbringing. Also because some of the most awesome racing we have ever seen has been at these circuits that unfortunately are not around thesedays. The sterile, processional, current day categories just do not compare to how motor sport was in the 70's and 80's in terms of the quality of the racing.

I'll never forget my time as a kid at such circuits as Lakeside and Surfers Paradise pit crewing for my father, and later being able to compete at Lakeside and Amaroo Park in my own car.

That's a great site. Now, if they can just bring back Amaroo Park. And Warwick Farm, Catalina, Parramatta Park (I ride my bike around there some afternoons), Westmead Speedway, Mount Druitt......

info on those sites is good but there is also a book, "Fast TRacks"by Terry Walker , published by Turton& Armstrong in Sydney which covers virtually every race track that exists or ever existed in Australia between 1904 and 1995 (like we've added a lot since then!), a map and a short history make up the two page entry for each track. It s bit dry otherwise but a fabulous resource if you want to know what we've lost, there are about 100 race tracks documented in the book! Oh that we had the choice today, many just fell into disuse because of a lack of interest, what a shame.

There's been plenty of talk about a new track at Wilton (off the Hume Hwy, near Picton) on the horizon to replace Oran Park at the end of 2006 - I hope the rumours are true !!
