Rally of Wales cancelled

Pirelli British Rally Champ press release
Quote:
BRCL DISMAYED BY CANCELLATION OF RALLY OF WALES

BRC Licensing Limited (BRCL), the organiser and promoter of the Pirelli British Rally Championship (PBRC), is dismayed to hear of the cancellation of the Rally of Wales. "We understand that the Rally of Wales has been cancelled principally because of a lack of entries in the supporting national events, not the International one," said BRCL chairman Ian Coomber.

"Shortly after the formation of BRCL in January this year, we heard rumours that the Rally of Wales was at risk. We immediately contacted the organising committee, and were assured that the event would go ahead as planned. Members of the BRCL board have been in contact with the event organisers throughout this week, but unfortunately it is now too late to take the steps that could, and should, have saved it.

"I would like to apologise to all the teams and crews who had already submitted entries to the Rally of Wales, but we can all now look forward to the start of the season and the first qualifying round of the Championship, the Pirelli International Rally, which will run from 25 to 26 April 2003.

"The other remaining rounds of the Championship are not at risk, and Championship registrations for 2003 look set to exceed those of last year. Following the successful PBRC Live event last weekend, to say that BRCL is disappointed would be a massive understatement."

Ceefax are reporting that there were just 25 entries received as of yesterday and only 7 possibles.

It is a real shame, it sound like the BRC event last weekend was a real success

This could be totally unrelated but, as some of you know I'm involved in the Rally of Kent which last ran in 2001 and was a Formula Rally round, we originally scheduled the event for last october but had to postpone due to a lack of entries. We looked long and hard at why it was and one reason that came up is that the clubmen didn't like the way they were treated as all the focus was on the FRally runners. So we promoted the rescheduled event as run by clubmen for clubmen and lo and behold we have 60 entries, plenty. S perhap the rallys organisers need to think less about the BRCand more about the clubbie.

Good point. Seems odd really that it's the BRC runners that get all the publicity yet it's the clubmen who effectively pay for the event.
