Dario's new colours
Apparently Franchitti's car is going to sport new livery in Milwaukee. A picture that I've seen shows him practicing in a blue car, and so I'm going to suggest that maybe he will be advertising Rothmans. That brand, along with KOOL and many others, are all owned by British American Tobacco. Because KOOL is mainly an American brand, perhaps Rothmans could benefit from CART's increasing international market. Just guessing here...

Here's the pic I found. Apparently it's from the Mid-Ohio test just the other day.
From autosport.com: "Franchitti was having his first run in a Lola chassis, which was painted in a new colour scheme set to be unveiled at the next Champ Car round at Milwaukee." http://www.autosport.com/newsitem.cfm?id=19005&series=7 As for anything I said about Rothmans, I'm merely speculating. |

Maybe it's another type of KOOL tobacco, or something...

Very nice! Too bad it'll soon be littered with sponsors..
But, that's the sport! |

Kool cigarettes now come in a blue package, as opposed to the traditional green. Maybe that's the reason for Dario's new colors.

And so many of my favorite liveries are tobacco sponsors. The black and gold JPS Lotuses. The Rothmans 956s and Williams F1 cars. A.J. Foyt's Copenhagen livery. The Silk Cut Jaguars. And of course, the old red & white Marlboro livery. It's a good move forward socially and politically, but I feel like we're losing an intrinsic element in racing. And more importantly, who will be the companies to now step up and throw all this money at racing?! The one other thing about the tobacco companies. They never asked drivers to _directly_ endorse their products. I don't think I've ever seen a race driver smoke. Basically every other type of primary sponsor, though, will demand drivers do commercials and publicity appearances. |

The thing that hurts me more is that Player's, who has given so much support to young drivers, will be forced to quit.

That's the dilemma, even though Cigarettes companies are "evil", they are obviously what keeps motor racing all around the world, alive. Offhand, I don't know how can F1, CART, and Nascar stay alive once all the tobacco companies are forced to withdraw?? Unless the "good" (non-tobacco) sponsors like Coke Cola,McDonald's,etc... can step in, motorsports could very welll become extinct!

Motorsports wont become extinct, but they may very soon become more cost-effective without the tobacco money to spread around.

The press has reported that Franchitti's got a new paint job. If it's the same as the picture, I don't know. Franchitti's helmet in the pic, though.

I don't think there'll be a problem. Cigarette sponsorship was banned from Australian motorsport years ago. At first, it was pretty difficult for some, but now Australian companies spend more sponsorship $$$ on local motorsport than any other sport. Others will step up, but it is important that the TV product is of a high quality.
