Baseline grid for Imola

Calculated with average diff% in three firsts GPs and prdicted pole time in dry condition with the average gain in pole time respect 2001:

1 SchumacherM Ferrari 1:22.481
5 SchumacherR Williams 0.39
2 Barrichello Ferrari 0.44
6 Montoya Williams 0.47
3 Coulthard McLaren 0.66
4 Raikkonen McLaren 0.90
------------------------------------------
14 Trulli Renault 1.50
15 Button Renault 1.54
7 Heidfeld Sauber 1.69
9 Fisichella Jordan 1.87
8 Massa Sauber 1.97
------------------------------------------
24 Salo Toyota 2.23
11 Villeneuve BAR 2.27
12 Panis BAR 2.37
10 Sato Jordan 2.43
20 Frentzen Arrows 2.63
17 Rosa Jaguar 2.75
21 Bernoldi Arrows 2.91
25 McNish Toyota 2.94
16 Irvine Jaguar 2.97
------------------------------------------
23 Webber Minardi 3.36
22 Yoong Minardi 4.53

It will be interesting if Renaults go on improving, if Jag's speed in Brazil was not a fluke, if Titanic/Honda goes on sinking , etc, etc

Obviously, if weather turns to be wet it will play havoc with those times/positions, and it surely will be even funnier (c:

Team mates diffs (in secs):

MSH - RB +0.44
RS - JPM +0.08
DC - KR +0.24
JT - JB +0.04
NH - FM +0.28
GF - TS +0.56
JV - OP +0.10
MSA - AM +0.71
HHF - EB +0.28
PR - EI +0.22
MW - AY +1.17

-Small diffs in general
-MSH get the bigger diff against a solid F1 driver (others as Sato, McNish and Yoong are not)
-Ralf is not that slow
-Very good work by Button against a reputed qualifier.
-Olivier is a Panis-in-the-ass to Jax
-Confirmed: Irvine is the third best F1 driver after MSH and de la Rosa.
-McNish needs to find speed soon, and I'd like he did it.

Wonderful comment, I hope Eddie reads it!

Thanks Schummy, the diffs seem to be less this year than in the past. And McLaren isn't as baddly off as some might have thought.

once they have the right setup on raceday...i'd figure the time and placings will change. i wouldn't place a bet based on free practice's time. Just go for Bridgestone runners if you want to because of the predicted weather.

I love the comment about Irvine, PDLR is badly underappreciated, and though I used to think Swerve was great, he's definately had his day, I still don't belive he should be a FoMoCo employee considering his wage demands. Glad to see my feeling that Sato shouldn't be in the #10 car, and Justin Wilson should, being borne out in the stats though.

Justin Wilson was so good in F3000. Rarely you can see such a mature and consistent frontrunning in that difficult formula (equal equipment, no excuses, no time to test properly on the track, etc)

I'm not 100% convinced it is his height, maybe british teams tends to understimate "normal surnames" or maybe british sponsors don't put the amount of money other countries mega-corporations put.

BTW, I'm not british

not too far off schummy i suppose, but the first three rows were always going to be dominated by the top 3 teams! glad to see kimi quicker than dc again, i reckon ron will be giving heidfeld a ring next week after todays performance!!

Mr v, we have DC missed half the session and we have no idea what was wrong with the T car. Given that DC was faster all weekend, I think he did well with a compromised set up.

maybe so EERO, but i was just saying that i was pleased that kimi out qualified him, and after a performance like todays, ron must be giving heidfeld some consideration.........bearing in mind that both kimi and nick have alot less overall experience than dc, thats all.

A little naive animation showing MSH-RB-RS-JPM-DC-KR qualifying diffs in percentage thru the four firsts GPs. Black lines are 1% and 2% and take in consideration that 1% is about 0.8 secs.
