Picchio cooling?
I have heard several folks say that of all the Daytona Prototypes, the BMW Picchio might be the most innovative.
My question: How does the DP2 get its cooling? There are no obvious radiators at the front, and it is mandated that they be in the front. Is this another attempt at using underbody airflow to help regulate cooling, like the Lola B98? Unless Daytona is very cold and the Goodyear tires don't lay a lot of rubber down, I doubt this is a very effective solution. Last edited by H16; 26 Jan 2003 at 12:35. |

Good question........I too am interested.
BTW....How is mandating no venting on the side of the cars a cost cutting measure? Or if it is not, why make it a front mount radiator, no side cooling cooling rulebook anyways? |

Maybe they want them to look different from Le Mans. Completely different. Notice how everything about them is against the current norm. Front radiators, roof (not that that is a bad thing) single element wings, and so on.

Pretty sure the Picchio takes its cooling in via those small slits in the nose below the wing. They look like brake ducts, but that has to be radiator cooling. If that is the case, the next question is where are the brake intakes?

Hey Mike, It doesn't need brake cooling ducts. They don't go fast enough to generate enough heat while braking to neccesitate the use of them.

Considering the overheating problems they had with the car, can it be considered that the front end was ill designed?

In general: Picchio uses this front configuartion on all its cars, but why?? Is there any vital benefit in having a convave shape from fender to roof??
