Where to for Allan McNish?
With Audi officially out of the major sports car series, and only competing at Sebring and LM24 with the R15, where does one of the greatest ever drivers go racing?

Lawnmower. Why would he go away? Since, at hoping so, Audi's desire is to be back with full program sooner or later and then they'll need Allan again. And anycase they'll need him already this year, albeit only in two races.
At least Audi will have a positive problem with choosing divers... newcomers Fassler etc. and only so few seats. Last edited by deggis; 5 Dec 2008 at 23:06. |

Audi is blatantly playing a long-term game here. Nobody expects the market problems to be over instantly. On the other hand, nobody expects them to be indefinite either. Equilibrium will be reached, likely in something like 24 months, which means that the upswing will likely be well underway when we sit here in 15 months contemplating the 2010 sportscar scene about to start, it is not inconceivable that Audi will be running a year-long sportscar program. Let's face it, they're not pressing ahead with the R15 with the intention of winning Le Mans in the depths of a recession and going off to take a nap for the 5 years after. They will not be foolish enough to liquidate their best driving assets - TK and McNish - in the intervening period of time.

How about McNish and Verstappen in one team, that would give some fireworks!

Allan is still a signed Audi driver, so he will not race anything else outside Volkswagen.

Maybe some seat time behind the wheel of a N24 Scirocco if VW decides to go again? GT3 R8 testing and driver assistance from Audi for a lucky team somewhere? Can the GT3 cars run in the Silverstone 24 hour, or bring the Scirocco.

Hey, it's a ride and I'm hoping he's the kind of driver that would jump in anything. If he really is so egotistical that he wouldn't get in a car cause it's beneath him I'll lose a LOT of respect for him. Besides, that track at night with those crowds of cars, think that's the ultimate test of driving and would hope he would interested in trying even once. Maybe it there's a chance the R8 could go, especially since there really isn't a "Porsche" team there, the top teams are true independents, correct?

Nope. Manthey Racing is the de facto Porsche factory squad at the Ring...

I wouldn't be surprised to see him at the Nürburgring. But why would they put him in a VW if Audi tries to go for an overall win with the R8 GT3?

I only suggested the VW as a car that had already been there and thought I had read was returning, the R8 GT3 was suggested as a possibility if it would be accepted at the N24. I'm not sure at all what the rules are but thought it was more geared toward street-type cars.

They're going to adjust the rules to accomodate cars like the R8 and make them compete for the overall win. The top class is faster than GT2 anyway. Not really street-type at all.

I can see McNish staying with Audi but then again a man of his talents would be in high demand. I'm pretty certain that Audi is retaining all their drivers from last year so DTM would be out. Has McNish competed in the 24hrs at the Ring before?

You wouldn't be suprised if Audi added PLM and/or an LMS race to their schedule, depending how Le Mans goes, either to celebrate the Le Mans win, or further develop the R15 if Le Mans doesn't go as planned.
