Just thought it would be interesting to see how things turned out if there was no "chase" in place
![]() Bit of mental arithmatic to do, but, we should get through ![]() Points after 26 of 36... 1. Tony Stewart - 3806 2. Jeff Gordon - 3627 3. Jimmie Johnson - 3534 4. Denny Hamlin - 3491 5. Kurt Busch - 3322 6. Mark Martin - 3291 7. Carl Edwards - 3280 8. Kasey Kahne - 3280 9. Ryan Newman - 3272 10. Juan Montoya - 3251 11. Greg Biffle - 3249 12. Brian Vickers - 3203 13. Kyle Busch - 3195 14. Matt Kenseth - 3165 15. Clint Bowyer - 3059 16. David Reutimann - 3048 17. Marcos Ambrose - 2830 18. Jeff Burton - 2738 19. Joey Logano - 2705 20. Casey Mears - 2639 |

My opinion on this whole chase thing is that there should at least be another championship given out either for being the points leader at the end of race 26, or being the points leader after Homestead under the old system.
Guess Tony Stewart wins both. |

Why? The drivers drive to the system they are given.
If there was no Chase, Stewart may have been less successful thus far as people would take more risks. |

the champs with the old system in the Chase years:
Standings: 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 On a similar note, ESPN did some articles last year on how each championship would've panned out had The Chase been used since 1975 1975-1979 1980-1984 1985-1989 1990-1994 1995-1999 2000-2003 Would've left a very interesting list of champions:

Thanks for that! ^ Very interesting. Kyle Petty with a Cup? Handsome Harry a two time champ and Terry Labonte would have lost both of his.

No comments on 2001 champ Sterling Marlin? That would've been interesting to see, because remember who was blamed AND threatened for....a certain incident?
I guess we would be discussing Jeff's "drive for 7" right now if it was still the old points system. Not to mention our defending champ, Carl Edwards. Will he go back to back? |

i saw sterling but did not pay attention to what year it was...would have been very crazy.
even still, a;; drivers in the list are of high quality in their own rights. just noticed also that mark martin is not listed. time to change that, mark! |

That is because under the old system the points leader usually had such a big cushion that he raced conservatively during the final portion of the season. This is why I don't place much stock in looking at how previous years would have turned out had their been a chase simply by looking at the final ten races. If there was a chase the points leaders would have raced more aggressively during the final races. There is no way, for instance, if the Chase existed in 2001 that Marlin would have beaten Gordon. All that said looking at past seasons this way is interesting and no season is more interesting than 2002. Why? Kurt Busch would have been 12th in points at Richmond but won the Chase so that is an example of why no one can truly be counted out because anyone can get hot and win the Chase.

if we want to get really technical here, there is no "chase" in the old system so there is no in and out.
