LucaBadoer should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
At last: Minardi confirm bridgestone tyre deal.

At last!

Minardi are on Bridgestones (confirmed)

So all the drivers are confirmed and now all the tyres for each team.

We all knew it was coming and it is good that Minardi will get soem running on F1 rubber before Melbourne (although it was kinda cool that they ran on Avon slicks for a bit ).

http://www.autosport.com/newsitem.asp?id=21960&s=5

So it lines up as follows

Bridgestone:
Ferrari
Sauber
BAR
Jordan
Minardi

Michelin:
McClaren
Williams
Renault
Toyota
Jaguar

Five a piece.

This puzzles me, surely all the tyre data collected by Minardi over the last 2 years now will be useless as they switch tyre manufacturers, has their new car been designed with Bridgestone tyres in mind?

A switch this close to the season seems very odd.

Minardi (I think) were one of the few (only?) teams to have to pay for tyres, so a switch could be beneficial financially. Especially if they want to be able to buy extra tyres for all the two seaters and other cars that do the rounds!

Also, it could be that tyres develop so quickly at the moment that year old data may be useless (?).

Im thinking more in the way the car behaves, all the teams are testing and testing tyres day after day to make sure the tyres suit the car, you can't just stick totally different tyres on a car and expect it to just *work*.

What if Williams stuck Bridgestones on their car? They wouldn't work at all as the Williams chassis has been created (among other things) around the tyres.
Remember when Mclaren changed from Bridgestone to Michelin, it took them almost half the season to adapt to the new tyres.

I know what you mean Monster and I'd wondered about it, but if you start with a new car then most of your data also goes out the window (depending on how related your car is to the previous year's).

indeed: Minardi will have to start all over anyway, more than 70 % of the PS03 is new, the engine is new(and has 70 BHP more than the Asiatech end is much lighter) + they have 2 new drivers.

B'stone have 1 top team (F), 3 mid-fielders (S, B, J) and Minardi.

Michelin have 3 top teams (M, W, R), and their other 2 teams (T, J) are both supported by major manufacturers.

Not exactly an even mix is it.

If Michelin get their tyres to work properly, B'stone will be (excepting F) nowhere results wise.

Michelin likely has the 2nd-5th place teams and the last place team. Bridgestone has the 1st place and 6th-9th

B'stone only really cares about Ferrari. If the rules were changed so that they only had to supply one team, that's what they would do.

i though it would be,
Bridgestone had to be 'prepared' to supply half the grid,
with Michelin already filling their quota i think Bridgestone was the easier (and cheaper) option.

I wonder if the reason behind the deal lies even deeper. For some reason Minardi did not want to renew the deal with Michelin, despite getting on well with them.

Perhaps with Jordan having the same engine, and also electing for Friday practise Minardi felt they should have the same tyres too.

Or even more speculatively perhaps Michelin said we will only supply tyres for x years, after that you must go elsewhere.
