Do you shoot other subjects?

I wondered if you reguarly shoot any other photographic subjects and where you go. I'm into nature and landscape, concentrating on my local nature reserves and Dorset's varied countryside.

I love taking nature shots, landscapes and the occasional architectural shots. Tulsa has a ton of art deco buildings downtown as well as other historical sites. I am also experimenting with lightning photography as well. We are expecting a round of thunderstorms tonight, so I am getting my gear ready.

To me, taking pictures of animals in their habitat (ie: not at the zoo) is the most difficult challenge of all. The animals are skittish and usually rely on cover and many are not out and about when the light is best.

I do some surfing, and candid portraiture. I belong to our local camera club which has taught me a lot about photography and we cover a wide range of subjects

Here's a nice day at a beach 20 minutes from me. Wave is closing out but still looks nice.

I photograph anything: motor racing, my garden, my pets, friends, local views, holiday shots. I just love my cameras. To give you some idea, I've actually had 37 rolls of film processed in 2003 alone!!!

For me, my pictures are my memories that I can share with other people. It costs me an absolute fortune in films and processing costs but I really enjoy it.

I shoot anything and everything, it drives my wife mad. Not so expensive now I have gone over to a digital camera, apart from the initial outlay

I consider myself a Jack of all trades (master of none), when it comes to subjects. I especially like nature but mostly have to stick to captive wildlife (the challenge of taking shots that look wild is hard).
Recently I have been thinking of joining a camera/photography club, but haven't quite plucked up the courage. Is any one else a member of a club?

I'll photograph just about anything. The only thing I really don't like photographing is people. I do take far too many photos.
Alesi95, it's alright if you can get a pet to pose perfectly. My little monster always wants to investigate why I'm getting down to her level and if I'm not careful that invariably means a little wet nose splodged on the end of the lens.

I don't actively shoot portraits, but I don't mind when the opportunity arises. Family mostly.

When my father died, I regretted not taking more of him - in fact, we were in a field of orchids 2 weeks before and I didn't take one of him. Just the bloody orchids. It was the last time we took him out. I'm going to regret that for the rest of my life. Now I become quite boring when out for a day!

For god's sake, shoot pictures of your family at every opportunity!

I can be shy sometimes but I just think about what a portrait may mean to either me or someone else in, say, 20 years. Embarrassment is fleeting, but the photo will last for years.

I used to HATE having my own photo taken until I looked at the albums and found that I don't know what I looked like age 10-21, apart from an optimisticly smirking school photo at age 16. If I have kids one day, how will they know what "Dad" was like? A lot of my life hasn't been documented, other than court appearances, restraining orders and lewd behaviour notices.

I shoot about 6-7 rolls a week depending on the weather and free time. It's expensive, but the old adage "film is cheap" is correct. You can't learn from shots you didn't take. If you take many, you can compare them and figure out what makes one better than another, and then use that knowledge out in the field. This leads to less shots of a particular subject and leaves you with more film and time to shoot other things.
A case in point : orchids. I used to shoot each individual orchid about 10 times. In a field of orchids, that adds up to many, many similar shots of slightly different subjects. But by comparing them, I have learned which are the better angles, focal lengths and lighting and now shoot about 3 shots of each orchid, knowing they will - to the best of my ability - get the most out of the opportunity. And therefore I can use the time saved to consider my shots in greater depth.

I certainly went round the houses to illustrate my point, eh?

Cheerio!

Some good thoughts there G_Ilott. Thankfully before my Dad passed away I had taken quite a few photos of him and especially with my son as well. When I first started taking photos I used to avoid portraiture or candid type stuff but I've come to the realisation that people are the most interesting thing that other people like to look at.

Thank you.
It was taken in an Owl and Otter Sanctuary in the New Forest.
It was the first outing for my new 2x extender, and my first scan on my new scanner.
