Best sounding engine ever
well for me, the Honda V12 from 1991 is up there, alongwith any 12 cylinder engine used by Ferrari

Re: Best sounding engine ever
Try to find an inboard video clip of the F2002 OVERSTEER...you'll change your mind. Especially when it changes it's gears.

I thought the F2002 sounded a lot like this year's Minardi...but maybe that's just me.

I'm not a fan of the way the engines seem to sound nowadays. I definatly liked any Ferrari V12, and also the BRM H16

Call me old-fashioned, but I have to go with the BRM V-16. The loudest, angriest-sounding engine I've ever heard!

For me it is the Ferrari V12's they used in 1994/95, mainly because I got to hear them live. One memory that will always remain was sitting in the grandstand at the 1995 Australian GP for practise when Jean Alesi came out and was the only car on track. You could hear this thing reverbing halfway around the track!

Lee, I fully respect your nostalgia, but that H16 BRM really wasn't a patch on the Ligier. Now if you could find me some sound from the Ligier, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. I just played it and my wife asn't impressed either - called me a hoon

Any old Ferrari V12. They had power, guts and the sweetest sound.

The late 60s, early 70s engines with the 3 litre rules (from 1967). Great sounds; the Cosworth DFV and the Matra V12s just sounded sooo right.
The main difference between them and today's stuff is that when the old engines misfired it was cause of a problem, today it means the effing traction control is on. Today with the revs so high they sound like screaming banshees rather than engines. Put a rev limiter on the damn things! |

I think I'm with Allon here - especially the Matra - but the sound of a DFV is still just wonderful and so evocative
Dear Valvebounce - which Ligier - they had alsorts of engines but in particular the DFV and Matra V12 - very different music each made |

Ligier with the Matra V12, of course. It made my teeth fillings vibrate.

For me it has to be the engine note of the Honda V6 used in the Williams in the late 80's..
It doesn't blow your ear drums out, but it's just got this instantly recognisable (to me anyway) engine note. It was a joy to see and hear the 1987 Williams go up Goodwood hill in the hands of Ricardo Patrese. |

As for the current engines, i was really impressed with the Merc engines in the back of the McLarens at Silverstone, they seemed to "scream" at higher revs, but then was ruined when the traction control kicked in! Last edited by Mr V; 16 Jul 2002 at 09:27. |

I know it's not F1, but the sound of the Panoz LMP01 Le Mans sportscar is awesome. Forget teeth fillings vibrating, this thing will loosen your bowels!

The McLaren going around indy in 2000 was amazing, it was also my first time and I was amazed that the fast cars really did sound sweet and the slower cars did not.

Any Sportscar / GT engine! over an F1 'whine'
Especially the Panoz from Le Mans 1997 or 2002. (just noticed - totally agree with AllonFS!) Plus the 360 Modena's at Le Mans this year. |

Easy choice.......Matra V12 especially the '72 version in the back of Chris Amon's Matra-Simca. My teeth still rattle when I remember that sound reverberating through the hills of Mosport Park in 1972.

Another non-Formula 1 engine that sounded especially sweet was the Peugeot V10 used in their 905 World Sports Prototype car. I was at Montreal for the car's debut in 1990, and everyone's jaw dropped at the sound of that car at speed down the main straight. I never had the previledge of hearing the Matra V12, but those who had said the Peugeot sounded similar.

Maybe i havn't experienced enough(only ever been to several races live)but my favorites are the BRM(off the CD'into the red'by nick Mason) and that awsome renault promo vidio from '92 where they were doing a track simulation with the engine on the bench.
