Check this out...
Joey Hand, #21 BMW M3 in Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series at Ohio on 24th June 2006.

You don't see it on the clip but later on he crawls out of the car but the guys on the scene have to pick him up and move him because of leaking fuel, which is quickly dampened down, exactly where he'd crawled out to.
I hope I never have to do that!

They took him to hospital but I don't know how he is now. He did crawl out so obviously wasn't too bad.

Wince. There is the one of the Aston Martin at Mid Ohio. Quite why there is a big drop from track to gravel is beyond me

You can see the rise in the infield...

its to help camber the corner on the infield... maybe so that the water runs off it better when it rains.

You mean this one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hl2UUunlI2Q

Yeah, if i'd have been on that corner i'd have been researching the colour of adrenaline 1st hand. The Ferrari that went off at Oulton last year was quite a big incident from what i hear, similar to the Aston where it's brakes failed and skipped the gravel, ending up on the tyre wall.

Michael Andretti's crash at Mid-Ohio was also a pretty spectacular one ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBiXLikp2SM ) but i'd prefer not to see crashes like that, but nose to tail 12 cars battling all race long like the Caterhams do

Easy Does It

THIS is a 0h30:37 in-car clip of a MINI at a 10 lap Club race at Daytona In'l Speedway. Driver was 1st in class. Watch the multi-panel rear view mirror for cars creeping up or disappearing after they are passed.

The 3.56 mile course really spread out the cars. See the track map HERE . The s/f line is at the lowest part of the image.

That is an incredible accident. I'm just amazed and glad that he's OK after that. Surely there shouldn't have been a dip as big as that in the infield?

Strongly agree with the last.
There is the "Golden Hour", during which a severely injured person, especially one with a head injury, can walk and talk, . The rotational and shock forces in that incident were highly likely to have caused internal head and brain bleeding, or damage to other organs. Without thorough assessment and if necessary agressive treatment is started in that time, the patient is many times more likely to die.

And I know this is a marshal's forum, but what about that driving? Paul Edwards' manoevre to 'tap' Hands' car was planned and deliberate. You can see him position his car and make the move. I know that would be acceptable in BTCC, so is it also in this series? More's the pity - this sort of thing, either side of the Atlantic, brings motorsport into disrepute.

Watching Champ Car these days it seems standard practice for the driver to be taken by car straight to the med centre - Michael's shunt was a good few years back now. I'd suspect it's the same for any other series who use the FIV method.

How long will it be before we get the same here? Sure it takes longer to get there sometimes, but the result is a highly trained team arriving with all the right equipment reasonably quickly, and while it's designed for ovals, that's the only way they do Champ Car anywhere in the world. Having said that, how many places in Britain are there where you can have a shunt on an average day and wait 30-40 secs for one out of breath marshal to turn up with a single extinguisher?

Lucky miss!

Just looking for videos of marshals at work (as its my 1st weekend this weekend!) and youtube came up with this one. Lucky that tree was there!
Like it says next to the video, Why motorsport marshals should always stand behind something solid!

Heres the clip:

It's been shown quite a few times now, but I'd leave it there anyway and let the mods sort it out.

Besides, that's quite a rallying thing you've got there, a circuit you'll find is much different - I think there are some good videos on the FIA institute site which might help you - www.fiainstitute.com

Best of luck!

Agreed, leave it there! There is no harm in reminding ALL Marshals that danger is just around the corner! (And you do not have a tree to protect you on a Race Track!!!)

quite right. There can't be too many circuits that have trees just inches off the tarmac...well, without armco guarding them anyway!

Hi Goosey and welcome to the madhouse!

Am guessing that you are up north as you say you're going to Croft, or are you just following the BTCC? If you can let us know we can help you with training and probably buddying up with an experienced marshal, and loads of other stuff too. I also have loads of videos of circuit incidents.

That had to be a scary incident to deal with - how on earth do you safely get the drivers out of those 2 cars propped up against each other?! The slightest move from either driver and it could come crashing down injuring them or the marshals around them trying to help them. Shame the video doesn't continue so we can see how they did actually deal with it.
