Australia's Best Drift into Winton
Sourced from www.racenews.com.au with thanks.
Some of the most powerful V8’s in Australia will go head-to-head with Japan’s hottest imports at Winton Motor Raceway on Saturday October 29 as the best drifters in the country battle out the final round of the Drift Australia Championship. “Drifting is the fastest growing form of motorsport in the world.” said series organiser Wayne Boatwright. “The drivers slide their cars though a series corners in high speed, tyre smoking series of two-car, tandem drift battles. The sport was born in Japan and is dominated by powerful turbo-charged Japanese imports but the big Aussie V8s are now starting to make an impact.” One of the most exciting new cars in the field is the awesome new 7-litre Holden Monaro driven by Jeremy Lake but even with 850 horsepower the Monaro is overshadowed in the power department by Robbie Bolger’s incredible super-charged 1000 hp CAPA Drift Ute. V8 Supercar driver Paul Morris will also campaign his own purpose built V8 Holden Commodore while rally ace Rick Bates will drive a specially modified Subaru WRX STi. “The current leader of the Drift Australia Championship, Queensland’s Darren Appleton, is hoping to wrap up the title at Winton but with a different winner at each round so far this year, nothing is certain” said Boatwright. “These are the best drivers and cars in the country. It will be a fantastic spectacle”. Practice and qualifying kicks off at Winton Motor Raceway at 9am on Saturday October 29. The “tandem” drift battles begin at 12:30pm. Tickets are available at the gate; adults are $25, children under 15 are free. |

So Big Trev, are you up for a skid in the hot Ford Ute, or just going along to watch ????
BTW, who is issuing the permit for the event ???? Drifting is a CAMS category in 2006. |

------------------------------------------------------------------------ P.S. Do we NEED to drag this thread into a CAMS vs AASA debate as well? or can we just get on with some motorsport? |

Thanks for the info there Big Trev, just curious about the event, thats all. There are plenty of other threads covering the CAMS vs AASA debate, I had no intention of doing that. You do seem a little touchy about the whole AASA thing today. Have you been warned too....? ? ? |

I'm with you KE 30.
My previous sig was "Drifting is a bit like homsexuality, it doesn't offend me, I just can't see the attraction" |

Sure you weren't the one trying to start the plane for us on Sunday evening at Bathurst! It sure needed a cranker then...

Drift is a pretty spectacular event. The Drift Australia championships are professionally run, and attract some very talented drivers. I suggest people check out Speedweek for the coverage of the last round at Oran Park, and then decide if they want to go or not. I'd never drift myself (I much prefer grip to slide), but it's definitely awesome to watch. Rick Bates, Paul Morris are fans. Simon Evans is keen for a crack at it in 2006 too.
I would have been there at Winton, except I have a wedding to attend that weekend..... |

Wakefield Park has been getting into Drift events since 2004.... this year I think there's already been 3 events (1 competition and 2 practice days).

And the event, like all other DA events this year, is sanctioned by CAMS.

Does it really matter who sanctions these events?

Not at all, I share Trev's view that as long as the event runs then who really cares, but the question was raised earlier and I didn't see the answer so far, so I was providing it.

I think it is a great new motorsport event (not really new but you know what I mean).
I personally prefer normal circuit racing but have seen it at a couple of AMRS rounds this year & the sound certainly got the drivers running up for a look. It's new, it brings in more spectators & is different to the usual ???? that is sometimes put on for the spectators. I believe it has a place now in Australian Motorsport. It's a bit like rallying on bitumen & it takes alot of skill to get those cars drifting and cornering at the same time without looping it. (I know I would ) Keep it going guys. |

The last Drift event run by Full Lock Drifting in September at Winton attracted a good size crowd.

I think drifting is certainly a class with potential, because there are a lot of disillusioned turbo charged vehicle owners out there.
It fills a very obvious void, and IMHO, requires almost as much skill as Rallying, (as mentioned by Kerri) by without the enourmous risks involved in attempting to thread a car through gaps in trees at 150 KPH +. Sure the 'Riceboy' jokes will follow Drifting, but it has potential to be as popular as Drag racing, and at the expense of Circuit Racing. I stand by my previous comments about no real attraction to me, give me 18 Sprintcars taking a green flag anyday. By as they say in the classics, " What ever floats your boat"....... |
